There is a moment in time when a person is redeemed, atoned for, forgiven, reborn, saved from their own sins. It is when they receive Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior; acknowledging that they are a sinner and that they need forgiveness from their sins and that they cannot do anything on their own in order to have forgiveness or restoration from their sins.

We receive Jesus Christ because we acknowledge we are lost in our sins and that only Jesus can forgive us our sins. When we are finally able to be honest about it, then we realize we need to “receive” Jesus Christ by faith in who He is and in what He has done for us on the cross. Why is this important to understand? Because there are many in the religious tradition that one is born into the faith and one only has to confirm that they agree with the basic beliefs of that religious tradition and then they will go to Heaven. But no one goes to Heaven if they haven’t received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. This means to believe that He paid our sin debt with His shed blood on the cross and we choose to follow Him in a personal relationship that causes us to become more and more like Him throughout our life. As with the personal testimony, there is our life before we met Jesus and were saved, in other words, we received Him; and then there is our life after we met Jesus.  John 1:11 - 13

There are three areas of salvation: 1. Justification: being saved from the penalty of sin; 2. Sanctification: being saved from the power of sin & 3. Glorification: being saved from the presence of sin.

Justification and salvation comes when one is saved from the penalty and condemnation of sin by putting faith in Christ. We have to be made just or right from our personal sins. It is impossible for us to do it alone. Only Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who never sinned even though He was tempted in every way as you and I, only Jesus can pay our sin debt. He did that on the cross but we have to acknowledge our sin and the fact that only He can and has paid our debt. It is that moment of honestly in the Spirit when we “receive” Jesus Christ.
